Jackson is a program to mix existing music, much like a DJ mixes tracks on vinyl or on CDs. If you have any interest in mixing music, as a professional or in your spare time, Jackson might be the tool for you.
Different from programs like Native Instruments` Traktor, Jackson does not emulate the traditional DJ setup composed of two turntables and a mixer. With Jackson we are trying to open up the real potential of computers for DJs and there is no point in emulating old technology. In many ways, Jackson resembles music-making programs like Ableton Live. Still, Jackson is much more DJ oriented than those programs and much more suited to mixing existing tracks.
Before you can play a track in Jackson, it has to be analyzed -once- so that the program knows about its musical structure. In the future, this additional information, called meta-data, will most likely be supplied by the producers or distributors of tracks.
