Introduction to WanSpy
Today’s computer networks doesn’t just confined to LAN, it is distributed over wide area across building, cities and countries through WAN Link. WAN link is still expensive and may be point of bottleneck many a times. It can be very difficult to keep computer networks up and running without monitoring and analysis of WAN utilization.
Monitoring and Analyzing WAN utilization may be important if Internet is the case.
How well this very useful resource of Organization is utilizing, may be a point of consideration in any organization.In these scenarios Network Administrator may look for a tool with which he can monitor WAN link and Internet Usage.
Overview of WanSpy
WanSpy is intended to give Network Administrator a visual view of how his
Expensive Wan Bandwidth is getting utilized. In addition to online monitoring WANlink, WanSpy also facilitates Network Administrator to keep record of WAN usages for inventory purposes.
WanSpy is based on SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) accepted acrossindustry for management of computer networks.
Key feature of WanSpy is to showdata transferred by each host IP pair in terms of bytes and packets through Wan Link.WanSpy uses Cisco Router’s IP accounting for this purpose.
WanSpy also have various utilities graphs to show Network Administrator IP traffic,Interface traffic, Memory, CPU utilization and WAN Bandwidth utilization of Cisco Router.
Application of Wanspy
WanSpy can be use for two different applications.
•Monitoring, how WAN is currently utilizing.
•Generating Reports of Wan usages in certain time period for inventorypurpose.
Minimum Requirements
Hardware
Pentium 300 Mhz. 32 MB RAM, Mouse, Color VGA Monitor running at 800x600and Network Interface card configured for TCP/IP.
Operating System
WanSpy can work on PC running Windows 9x, Windows Millennium Addition,
Windows NT and Windows 2000 with Winsock 2.0 compliant TCP/IP on networkinterface card
Network Device
WanSpy Require Cisco Router with IOS version 11.3 or Later.
Run on Win9x/NT/2000
Features
Use Cisco(R)`s IP Accounting
Snmp ver 2c complient.
Very simple upgradation path to all coming SNMP versions.
It allows you to set Refresh Time according to network load.
Graphical display of first 10 IP pairs in the table showing their percentage utilisation of the overall bandwidth on WAN port.
Interface traffic graphs showing incoming and outgoing octets on all interfaces.
IP Traffc graphs showing incoming ,outgoing, forwarded, discrarded ip packets.
Cisco system graph showing free memory and CPU utlization.
Bandwidth utilazation graph showing %utilization of incoming and outgoing traffic
Audio alarm generated when the number of bytes transferred exceeds the specified limit on the WAN port. The last alarm time is also displayed on screen.
Log file generated which stores the IP pair values which cross the specified limit.
Facility to print and save reports showing source IP, destination IP, bytes transferred, packets transferred and violations on WAN port.
Disply Interface table and interface details that can either export to Microsoft Excel or text file. |
